Sump, Circulation, and Ejector Pumps

Overview

Pumps are very important to plumbing. It’s easy to take running water in your house for granted, but without pumps it all ends. If you have city water, the pressure that gets the water to you is provided by huge pumps that you fortunately don’t have to worry about maintaining. The rest of them are on you. The number of pumps in your house or business varies greatly depending on your individual situation. It’s even possible that you don’t have a single pump in the whole place! Often the water pressure provided by the city is sufficient to move the water around your building and gravity acts as the “pump” to get the waste out. We will detail below some of the types of pumps that you might find and the purpose they serve.

Circulation Pumps

For our purposes here we’re going to lump many of the pumps that you might find around your home or business under circulation pumps because they help move water around the building.

Strictly speaking the term “circulation pump” usually refers to a pump that circulates hot water for a hydronic heating system.  You can only expect to have this in a hot water heating system, whether oil, gas or electric. When the circulation pump goes down in one of these systems the water heated by the furnace can’t get to your radiators and you are left without heat.

Another type of pump that is most often found in commercial buildings and sometimes in large houses is known as a recirculation pump (or recirc for short). This device circulates hot water through bypass circuits so that hot water is available much more quickly at locations far from the water heater.

In situations where a city water supply is not providing sufficient pressure, a booster pump in conjunction with a pressure regulator can bring the pressure up to acceptable levels.

We can install, service, and replace any of these types of pumps and their attendant motors and control systems.

Sump Pumps

Sump pumps are made to pump unwanted water out of your building. Typically that’s groundwater that seeps into your basement and causes all sorts of mayhem. You would need a pump anytime that the level of the water is below where a gravity drain can work and needs to be pumped up to a higher level where it can be drained away. Sump pumps are designed as a self contained unit with a float and switch and properly placed in a basin below the level of the floor. The float and switch turn the pump on and off automatically.

We are experienced with all types of sump pumps and can handle service, installation and replacement.

Ejector Pumps

Ejector pumps are designed to pump waste up from restrooms that are below sewer or septic level. These systems typically include a built in grinder to keep solids from clogging the pump. Ejector systems, as all plumbing systems must be installed properly. The consequences of shoddy work are at best unpleasant and can be downright unhealthy.

We are experts with these systems.

PIPES

Water Piping

Water piping can be found in all sorts of materials including most commonly PEX, CPVC, brass, copper, and galvanized steel. Copper is fairly common but is being replaced by PEX in many applications. PEX is shorthand for Crosslinked Polyethylene and can be found in several variations. PEX is much less expensive than copper and somewhat more resistant to bursting caused by freezing (though hardly freeze proof). Brass is generally reserved for valves and fittings but is also used for short lengths of pipe. Galvanized steel pipe is rarely used anymore because of corrosion issues but it does pop up occasionally (usually causing trouble).

We have the expertise to repair, replace, and install all of these kinds of water piping. We also know exactly what to use for each application.

Waste/Drain Piping

Waste Piping, also commonly known as sewer pipe comes most commonly in cast iron and two types of plastic; ABS and PVC. Cast iron pipe is very common in older construction and is still used today but is largely being replaced by the much less expensive and corrosion resistant plastic types. ABS pipe (usually black) is marginally less expensive than PVC (usually white), but we have noticed several issues over time that make PVC our choice for Drain piping. Even with PVC pipe one has to be careful to choose the proper style and weight for the application to ensure a long trouble free service life. We often use higher grade pipe than is called for by code for this very reason. No matter what the choice of pipe, it must be installed properly to get the most out of it.

From clearing clogs to replacing a main line to the sewer, we can handle all of your Waste and drain pipe needs.

Outdoor Plumbing

There are many areas outside your house that use water. Just like inside plumbing, they can get damaged or need replacing. A leaky or broken outdoor plumbing fixture can waste hundreds of gallons of water in a short amount of time.

That’s when you need to call a professional plumber, like Simply Green Sewer & Rooter to come to the rescue. We’ll get your plumbing fixed quickly and accurately.

Gas Services

Gas piping is a piping system in your house used to carry natural gas from the supply directly to your heating system. The system is made up of branch lines, which run to individual appliances throughout your home. Branch lines lead to drop lines, which are vertical pipes that drop down to an appliance. We can help you with the following gas services

  • Install and repair gas lines - Types of Gas Lines We Repair and Install

We are adept at servicing all types of gas lines, including those made of corrugated stainless-steel tubing (CSST), polyvinyl chloride (PVC), polyethylene, and other materials. We provide high-quality installations, hookups, and repairs for all types of natural gas appliances. All our gas line services are completed safely and up to code.

  • Install and repair gas powered appliances around the house inside and outside.

 GARBAGE DISPOAL

REPAIRS & REPLACEMENTS

Garbage disposal installation is an affordable investment that will help you in a multitude of ways. Costing between $165-300 for a quality food disposal unit, once you factor in the money saved on other waste disposal expenses, you’ll be coming out on top.

Keeping your garbage disposal maintained and repaired will keep it working exactly the way it should for its entire lifespan of 5-10 years.  If you already have a food disposal installed in your sink, you may run into problems at some point. At RLH Plumbing Service, we’ve been installing, maintaining, and repairing food disposal units for our clients as long as we’ve been providing them with other plumbing services.

 DRAINS

Drains are one of those things we don’t think about until there’s a problem with them. When it comes to plumbing repair, many of our calls have to do with clogged tub drains, sink drains, and even basement floor drains.

At RLH Plumbing Service we recommend always using preventative measures. For sinks and tubs, try hair traps, and if you’re dealing with problems with your basement drainage, you’ll want to keep your basement floor clean so that dirt and debris don’t clog your pipes.

Water Heater

Tank Water Heaters

Water heaters come in many shapes, sizes and types. Tank type water heaters can be natural gas fired, LPG fired, oil fired or electric. Tank sizes usually range from 10 to 80 gallons (and even larger!) but 40 or 50 gallon water heaters are most common. Also fairly common are systems that heat domestic hot water indirectly from the boiler that heats the house. These systems come in several varieties both with and without storage tanks and varying levels of complexity. We are experienced with all of these systems at RLH Plumbing Service, installing, repairing, servicing, and replacing them almost daily.

Tankless Water Heaters

Modern tankless water heaters are a relatively new kid on the block, but have really been coming into their own in the last few years. Wall hung condensing gas fired water heaters are very efficient and can save greatly on both space, and energy costs but installation is by no means for amateurs. Combi boilers can be used to heat both your hot water and your home with maximum efficiency in a compact package.

Tubs and Showers

Bathtubs

Very few of us have freestanding baths these days, as tub/ shower combos are most common. There are however plenty of reasons for them and plenty of variety. The cast iron clawfoot tubs are often desired for style more than function. There are also many more functional tubs, such as whirlpool tubs, jetted tubs, and soaking tubs and most can be also found either standalone or as part of tub/ shower combos. Whatever your preference, we have a solution. We are able to replace and install all sorts of tubs and repair, install, and replace their associated faucets and drains.

Tub Shower Combos

This is the most common setup for the household bathroom as its the most flexible and space efficient. There is a bewildering variety of units in all shapes, sizes, and colors covering every application and taste.

Just like with the standalone units, we are able to install and replace Combo units as well as perform repairs and replacements of their associated plumbing, valves and diverters.

Showers

Walk in (or roll in) shower enclosures are by far most common for commercial applications but can be very well suited for home use, especially where there are space or accessibility constraints. Showers are much easier to get in and out of for those with accessibility issues than tub/ shower combos. Shower stalls can also be much smaller, especially corner shower units, which can be stuffed into unbelievably tight quarters. As with all tub and shower units we can install and replace most any style of shower and install, and repair or replace the associated plumbing.

Well Service

Well Service

Drilling new wells is a highly specialised discipline requiring dedicated heavy equipment. But maintaining the pumps, piping and other accessories is in a skilled plumber’s wheelhouse. That’s not to say it’s easy. Even the simplest well systems can be very complicated and difficult to service. A savvy plumber is required to troubleshoot the many issues that can pop up. A well system will typically have a storage tank inside the home that provides a steady supply of water for peak demand hours without over stressing the well. A control system is then required to keep the tank level up and regulate the pressure. Quite often a water treatment system is added to improve the quality of the water, adding to the complexity. These systems, complex as they may be, are well within our expertise level.
